steamed rice with caramelised onions

Hi, I wanted to ask what is the best way to make steamed rice with caramelised onions. Do I just cook the rice and the onions separately and then put them together when their both ready, or maybe I can do this in a better way? I want to explorate more in cooking but I'm very unsure about anything so I figure I'd ask for advice, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question and thanks you all🥺
